Each year, three nominees are selected by the academy. Though infrequent, there have been occasions when all three nominees came from the same country; this happened in 2008 and 2010, when all the films were from the United States. The first recipient of the award was Amélie, a multinational production by Germany and France.[3] The most recent award was given in 2010 to Avatar.[4] The nation with the most cumulative nominations is the United States, with 15 of the 27 nominations to date. Other nations with multiple nominations are France (with four), Germany and the United Kingdom (with two each). Mel Gibson holds the record for the most wins (with two) and for the most nominations (with four); other people with multiple nominations including Woody Allen, Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Ron Howard, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, Zhang Yimou, Alejandro González Iñárritu, James Cameron, Letty Aronson and Gareth Wiley (with two each).
